PFAS-Free & Environmentally Friendly Waterproofing
All outdoor brands are removing PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) from rainwear to make gear safer for you and the environment. While these changes are better for the planet, it also means you’ll need to take a little extra care to maintain your gear’s waterproof performance, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

Keeping Your Rainwear Clean
Dirt, body oils, and sweat can clog the waterproof-breathable membranes in your gear, reducing its effectiveness. To keep your jacket and pants in top shape:
- Use a Technical Wash – Regular detergents can damage the waterproof coating. Instead, use a cleaner designed specifically for rainwear.
- Wash on Gentle Cycle – Cold water and a mild cycle help preserve the fabric’s integrity.
- Skip the Fabric Softener & Dryer Sheets – These can leave a residue that interferes with breathability.
- Tumble Dry Low or Air Dry – Heat helps reactivate the water-repellent finish, but always check the care label first!
Restoring Waterproof Performance
Over time, rain jackets and pants can lose their Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish, causing water to soak into the fabric instead of beading up. You can restore water resistance by:
- Using a Spray-On or Wash-In DWR Treatment – Available at River Rock! These easy-to-apply solutions refresh your gear’s ability to repel rain.
- Applying Heat – After washing and treating, a quick tumble dry on low or a warm iron (if recommended by the manufacturer) helps set the waterproofing in place.
