June 17th, 2017 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at A. Smith Bowman Distillery

Join A. Smith Bowman Distillery & River Rock Outfitter for this new, FUN watery tradition! Individuals or teams from around the area are invited to create their own boats made from used bourbon barrels and race them in Deep Run. There will be prizes and awards for the two fastest finishes and the most spirited boat! All proceeds from this event go to support the American Canoe Association.

All competitions must have rules, even the FUN ones. This is so everyone is on the same page and equal footing. Please read the rules below carefully. Send any questions you have to Remember the Bourbon Barrel Regatta is all about being creative, innovative and most of all having FUN!!
All boats must be brought to A. Smith Bowman Distillery on Saturday, June 17th, 2017 between 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. for check-in and inspection. Any boats not on grounds by 10:00 a.m. will not be allowed to race. Race Rules

  1. All entrants must be registered by May 20th, 2017.
  2. All boats must be checked in & inspected by 10 a.m. the day of the race.
  3. Only barrels from A. Smith Bowman Distillery can be used in the construction of the vessel.
  4. The main hull/flotation source of the boat must be the wood barrel. No additional flotation source (except for another barrel) may be directly attached to the barrel.
  5. Waterproofing agents and methods may be used on the barrel.
  6. Any material may be securely attached to the barrel for stabilization or decoration purposes.
  7. This is a family friendly event, absolutely NO foul language or inappropriate imagery on the vessels will be permitted.
  8. The captain of the boat must be an adult and must be present in/on the boat at all times during the race.
  9. The crew compartment CANNOT be enclosed so as to interfere with escape should the vessel instantly convert itself into a submarine! Each crew member must be visible.
  10. Craft must be safe for occupants and other boaters. No sharp edges or anything posing a danger is permitted
  11. One legitimate bilge pump or bailing device may be used to remove water from the vessel. **
  12. All boats must carry one closed gallon jug with 25’ rope tether firmly secured to the vessel. Jug should remain inside the boat while racing. The jug is not to be used as a flotation device. It is strictly for locating and retrieving sunken remains.
  13. All boat occupants must provide for themselves and wear a fully buckled, undamaged United States Coast Guard approved Type III life vest. **
  14. All participants must wear closed-toe shoes.
  15. Participants must provide their own paddles. **
  16. NO consumption of alcoholic beverages before or during the race.
  17. Children under 13 years of age will not be permitted to race.
  18. All participants must be able to swim 25 yards without a U.S.C.G.-approved life vest or assistance.
  19. All participants must sign a waiver (or if they are below 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must sign a waiver on their behalf).
  20. No animals may participate.
  21. A. Smith Bowman Distillery & River Rock Outfitter reserves the right to break races into heats.
  22. Any boats or crew not ready to race at their designated start time will be automatically disqualified.
  23. Participants must retrieve their boats (or its remains) from the water at the end of the race and remove them from the property by 6 p.m. that evening.

** Life vests, safety equipment, bilge pumps, rope and aluminum paddles can be purchased through River Rock Outfitter.

To enter the Deep Run Bourbon Barrel Regatta, a completed registration form and signed waiver must be returned to A. Smith Bowman Distillery by May 20th. The fee to enter the regatta is $150. This provides you entry as well as one bourbon barrel. All boats must be made using A. Smith Bowman Distillery barrels. Extra barrels may be purchased for a fee of $75 per barrel.

Race Day Schedule
8 a.m. – 10 a.m.: boat/crew check-in and inspections
10 a.m. – 11 a.m.: boats will be moved to the shore of Deep Run
11 a.m. – 1 p.m.: Running of the Regatta
1:30 p.m.: Awards & Prizes awarded (time is approximate)
