Orienteering 101: Compass Reading

Product Description

Ever wanted to learn how to find your way through the woods with just a map and compass?

Whether you’re a beginner hiker or an outdoors expert, come on out to Motts Run Reservoir Recreation Area to have some fun and learn the basics of orienteering. The trip will consist of some trail walking to start the day, a lesson on how to use a map and compass when picking and following a route without a trail, and finally some hands-on experience with orienteering to multiple locations. The trip will involve about 5 total miles of walking on flat to moderately sloping terrain, and is open to those of all age groups that are comfortable walking for 2.5-3 hours.

We will meet at the parking area at the Motts Run Reservoir Recreation Area at 10am. River Rock Outfitter will provide maps for all hikers, plus a compass to take home at an additional charge.

The price of the lesson/trip with the map is $20, and with a compass $30. If you are bringing your own compass, I suggest that you use one with a rotating dial and adjustment for declination. Other required supplies are 2 liters of water, a backpack, bag lunch and/or snacks, and a rain jacket (just in case!). We will be walking off-trail through possibly dense undergrowth, so long pants and sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended as well. We hope to see you there, and please don’t hesitate to ask any questions at all.

We ask that all participants pay ahead of time either by phone at 540 372 8708 or at River Rock Outfitter.
